This just in...

My former pastor just put this on Facebook and I thought it was so appropriate to my last post.

I started to write a comment, am still trying to interpret what the video is saying (have watched it twice).

I think I'm still wrestling with whether the video is just a tongue-in-cheek send up of contemporary church services, or a more critical view.

The church where I attend is a lot like the video, except: The song leader doesn't sell CDs, the pastor doesn't have hip glasses, and, no apparent tattoos.

Nonetheless, the music is loud, the pastor does frequently wear "cool" jeans and graphic shirts, and sometimes has "spiky" hair, and has a stage "presence" that is expressive. He doesn't claim to be "the one" with the answers, but always points to The One who is.

If it were up to me, I'd be fine dialing the music back just a bit, and even extending the sermon. But it's neither up to, or about, me. It's up to people a lot smarter than me to figure the balance between worship and instruction.

Probably a lot of blue-haired ladies (and I'm using the term descriptively, not pejoratively) would be appalled at the sound levels and lightshow, and casual dress. I get that.

Wouldn't the enemy just love - DOESN'T he just love, that some, maybe many, Christ followers will turn on one another, quibbling about form over substance?

But as long as the message is Jesus Christ, does it really matter whether the messenger wears a polyester suit with wide lapels, or jeans with [fake] wear spots and rips?
